The World Chess Championship 1961 was a rematch between Mikhail Botvinnik and Mikhail Tal, held in Moscow from March 15 to May 13. Botvinnik, entitled to a rematch after losing the title to Tal in 1960, won convincingly with a score of 13–8. Tal, despite being the favorite due to his prior victory and youth, struggled as Botvinnik’s strategic mastery and preparation neutralized Tal’s aggressive style. It was later revealed that Tal had health issues during the match, which may have affected his performance. Botvinnik’s preparation included specific anti-Tal strategies, demonstrating his adaptability and solidifying his reputation as one of the most resilient champions in chess history. This victory made Botvinnik the first player to have three separate reigns as World Chess Champion, and at 49 years old, he became the oldest champion in a World Chess Championship match since 1892.
