FIDE World Chess Championship 1978

The 1978 World Chess Championship, held in Baguio City, Philippines, was a historic showdown between defending champion Anatoly Karpov and challenger Viktor Korchnoi. Amid Cold War tensions, the match featured a first-to-win-six-games format, with Karpov taking an early 5–2 lead. Korchnoi launched a dramatic comeback to level the score at 5–5 after 31 games, but Karpov secured victory in the 32nd game, ending the match with a score of 6–5 and 21 draws. The match was infamous for off-board controversies, including allegations of hypnosis, disputes over seating arrangements, and the bizarre «yogurt incident,» where Korchnoi’s team accused Karpov of receiving coded messages. This event remains one of the most dramatic and contentious in chess history.
